I recently remodeled my home office, giving the place a much-needed face-lift and consolidating the sprawl into some proper, appropriate office furniture. Having found the desk I wanted and placed it in just the right spot to best enjoy the view, there was just one thing missing. I absolutely was NOT going to sit on that cheap, threadbare "secretary" chair one more day!

Until you’ve been out shopping for office furniture (and chairs) you have no idea how many choices there are! Some are very futuristic, others very traditional. Most are minimalist, and aside from the Executive chairs, while they all have different details, they all seemed pretty much the same. How could I possibly decide which one to get? All these facts and figures, what ones really mattered?

What I learned the hard way is that the most important factor in the entire search, more important than style or your personal taste, even, how long the chair is going to have you feeling comfortable. What felt good for the first few moments often became uncomfortable quickly, once I started to pay attention to what my body was telling me. The difference between a cheap chair and a mid-priced chair, it seemed, wasn’t as significant as the jump from mid-priced to high-end.

When I saw the high-end price tags, I about fell out. How could a single chair cost more than my sofa and loveseat? More than my 32" television? These things were outrageous, they must be nuts! I bought the mid-priced chair, found one I liked that was on sale.

Happy Ending story? Not hardly. That mid-priced chair was rated for 3-4 hour occupancy – PER DAY. Yep, it had lumbar support, but not where I needed it. Yes, it has "waterfall" leg position, which DOES help with circulation and posture, but only if I remember to sit right. When I get involved in a project, posture goes by the wayside and there is no significant support. I have to acknowledge that part of the problem is my own fault for not sitting properly in it. There. I acknowledged it. Doesn’t do a thing to make the chair more comfortable, though.

The high-end chairs start in at $300 minimum street price, usually closer to $550, and go up above a thousand dollars. I’m sure there are some that are three thousand dollars or more, but I’m talking real world now, not designer labels. So why isn’t there a happy ending?

If I’d thought it through a bit further, I’d have realized that the only other place I spend 8 hours a day is my bed. I don’t spend as much time in my car’s seat, and yet I’d worried more about it being comfortable. When it comes down to it, the chair is worth whatever it costs to make me comfortable. If it can do that over the next 5 or 10 years, then it will more than have paid for itself. At $600, based on only a 5-year life expectancy, that office chair would cost me less than 50 cents a day. How many times would I have gladly given several times that much to not be sore at the end of the work day? How much more work would I have gotten done if I wasn’t getting sore and having to get up and shift my weight, fidget in the chair?

A quality ergonomic chair is probably the most cost-effective thing I could have given myself to improve my comfort and efficiency. So I’m back in the market for a new chair, but now I’m looking at the buying decision from a very different perspective.
