The LED sign is the single most important advancement in signage technology. The eye catching light and movement have helped business capture additional customers and increase their bottom line.

Electronic Message Centers have also helped sign companies and distributors make more money. There are now literally thousands of firms offering visual communication and advertising LED products to business owners.

As more customers enter the marketplace, more sign distributors search for ways to capture their part of the profit. In an effort to sell more sign products, some manufacturers have cut cost by cutting corners. I visit with potential and existing LED sign customers every day. It is apparent there is an "information gap" between sign users and sign makers. It is difficult to compare signs without having the necessary knowledge to compare them. The old axiom, "You get what you pay for" has never been more true!

It is possible to have two eight foot by 2 foot (8' X 2') 2 line one color, LED message centers sitting next to each other and experience a cost difference of 300% or more! Why?

Because LED message center quality is not evaluated by size!

These two message centers could have an LED pixel count difference of 300% or more, resulting in a dramatic difference in resolution and light output. Think Plasma TV vs. a Black and White TV.

The following is a list of key points, elements, components, and technology factors that will help guide your decision making process. Also included are important factors that I believe are important considerations.

Due Diligence

The first consideration when making a purchase is determining the record of the company you are dealing with. Never consider purchasing an outdoor LED sign without first interviewing a sales representative. The sign seller should want to find out your businesses needs, application, and requirements. In many instances, it may be necessary for an actual site review of your property to determine the type and size for your business. Ask the seller if they can provide that type of service. You should also educate yourself on the local, state, or transportation department sign codes and regulations. The seller should also demonstrate a basic knowledge of the codes that pertain to your business location. You don't want to pay for a product you can't put up!

The Money - Price vs. Cost plus Value

Zig Zigler said, "Price is a one time thing, but cost is a lifetime thing!" You have to live with your business decisions, and money spent, is money you can't get back. When I advise my clients, I look at the situation through the eyes of the business owner. "What would I do if this were my business?" Sometimes a lower priced unit will accomplish the job. Sometimes the lower priced unit will cost the location far more in lost business.

Your primary concern should be, "What value will I receive from my investment?" Do you believe the LED sign will bring you new customers? How many? How often?
